Guide · Google Business Profile

The category decides
what you are shown for.

Of everything on a Google Business Profile, the primary category does the most to decide which searches you are considered for at all. It is also the field most often chosen in thirty seconds during setup and never revisited.

Primary category: the most specific one that is true.

Specific beats broad, provided it genuinely describes the main thing you do. A business whose work is mostly one service should usually carry that service as its primary category rather than the general trade.

The word “true” is doing real work in that sentence. A category chosen to catch searches you do not actually serve is a reason for suspension, and competitors report it.

Secondary categories: few, and only what you offer.

Secondary categories widen the set of searches you can appear for, but each one dilutes the signal about what you primarily are. Adding ten because they are vaguely related tends to reduce visibility rather than increase it.

The useful discipline is to add a secondary category only for a service you would be happy to receive a call about tomorrow.

Look at what the top three use.

The businesses already appearing in the map pack for your target search have made a category choice that works in your market. Reading it is not copying — it tells you which of several plausible categories Google actually associates with that search locally.

Where their choice differs from yours and they outrank you, that is worth a test. Category changes take effect quickly and are reversible, which makes them one of the few safe experiments on a listing.

Revisit yearly.

Google adds and retires categories constantly, and the one that best describes your business may not have existed when you registered. A yearly look takes ten minutes.

Also revisit after the business itself changes. Businesses evolve out of their original category quietly, and the listing keeps sending them the work they no longer want.

Then fill in the rest of the listing.

Categories decide which searches you are considered for; the rest of the profile decides whether you win them. Of the 49,994 GTA listings we surveyed, 11,503 publish no opening hours at all and 14,536 have no reviews.

Services with descriptions, real photographs, hours including holidays, and a service area that matches where you will actually travel: all free, all under your control, and all more valuable than another round of category tinkering.

Questions

The usual questions.

How many categories should I have?

One primary that is exactly right, and usually two to four secondaries. Businesses with ten are almost always diluting themselves.

Will changing my category lose my rankings?

It can shift them, which is the point. Changes are reversible and take effect within days, so a considered test is low risk.

Can I use a category my competitor uses if I do not offer that service?

No. That is a misrepresentation and a common cause of suspension, and suspension takes far longer to undo than it took to cause.
